Green Friday and its Roots
It's never too early to discuss Green Friday. Originating in 2015 as a response to Black Friday, Green Friday aimed to shed light on the adverse effects of consumerism. Canada established its "Buy Nothing Day" version as early as 1992. Over time, this event evolved to coincide with Green Friday.
The purpose of Green Friday is to encourage us to rethink our shopping habits, opting for mindful, eco-conscious purchases from small or local businesses or refraining from shopping altogether on that day.
Like Black Friday, Green Friday occurs the day after Thanksgiving.
In contrast to the consumerist frenzy associated with Black Friday, Green Friday is significant in helping us simplify our lives and not overconsume.
